How does it work?
ElectraStar's network uses revolutionary broadband powerline technology ("BPL") to turn the electrical lines you use everyday into a sophisticated telecommunications system. ElectraStar transforms the power sockets conveniently located in each room of your home into multi-functional access points for electricity, high-speed internet and telephone, plus multimedia services like TV, video-on-demand, digital radio, etc.

ElectraStar operates its BPL network in Prague in partnership with PRE (Praľká energetika a.s.), owner-operator of the city's electrical network.

ElectraStar's internet and phone services are much more convenient, and less expensive, for customers to use than services from telecom or cable TV companies, because ElectraStar's BPL system takes advantage of the universal availability of electrical lines in each room of every house and business in the city. Since all of ElectraStar's services are so easily available on the common power socket, you only have to plug in the ElectraStar modem to be immediately online! And you don't need to make special installations, as is usually the case with ADSL services, because ElectraStar's signal is present in every room of your house on your electric wires!

How does ElectraStar's signal arrive at your power sockets? We have set up BPL network "nodes" with our partners PRE at the many neighborhood transformer substations that PRE operates to supply all houses in the city with electricity. Every transformer substation converts PRE's incoming medium voltage power (5kV/20kV) to the low voltage of 230V/400V that you use at home. From these transformer substations, wires go to street junction-cabinets which supply each single home with electricity available at wall sockets. ElectraStar's BPL system uses this existing infrastructure and together with PRE we make sure the system is well-maintained and monitored full-time so your ElectraStar services will be absolutely stable and reliable.

It's easy to connect ElectraStar's modem to your home network - instead of plugging the Ethernet cable from the modem directly into your PC just plug it into the LAN port of your network hub or wireless router, and verify all your PC's settings as shown in the answer to the 3rd FAQ question in this section.
Back to FAQ
How do I protect my PC from infections?
Make sure your computer is protected by up-to-date firewall and internet security software. ElectraStar recommends anti-virus and anti-intrusion software available from Symantec, AVG or McAfee.

Make sure you also regularly visit Microsoft’s update center at www.microsoft.com to download Windows security updates.

No software can protect you against 100% of the threats appearing periodically on the internet. ElectraStar does not guarantee that the above-mentioned software products will prevent an infection of your computer, especially if you open e-mail attach-ments without knowing their contents or source, which you should never do.

Although ElectraStar's own network is extremely secure, the internet is infested with malicious code intent on infecting or intruding into PC's worldwide, and it is your responsibility to protect your PC with firewall and security software.

Will I get the speed I pay for? I'm tired of exaggerated speed claims!
Yes, you will get the internet speed you pay for with ElectraStar. Our customers tell us they've been misled by the exaggerated speed claims of other telecom companies, who advertise speed they cannot deliver to most of their customers except in short bursts lasting 1 or 2 seconds! One of the main reasons for this is that these telecom companies use a much higher "aggregation rate" than ElectraStar, which is explained in the answer to the next question in this FAQ list. Because of the physical characteristics of the electrical network used by ElectraStar to transport your internet signal, your speed may fluctuate at different times of the day due to variable electrical loading patterns on the network on your street, due to your neighbors' daily power consumption habits. That's why ElectraStar always sets your speed limit about 20% higher than the amount stated in your service contract, so even though sometimes your speed might be less than you expect, you'll often get much higher speed than the amount you're paying for.
Back to FAQ
Why is "aggregation rate" important?
The main reason why you get more reliable speed with ElectraStar is because our "aggregation rate" is the lowest of any residential internet service in the Czech market. Aggregation rate refers to how many customers can be connected on a network "node" segment at the same time - this is important because it determines how many people share limited bandwidth at the same time. Obviously more people sharing bandwidth reduces everybody's speed. Most telecom companies selling residential ADSL services in the Czech market use an aggregation rate of 50:1 - this is 10 times worse than ElectraStar's aggregation rate of only 5:1, which means a maximum of 5 customers share the bandwidth on an ElectraStar network segment instead of 50 customers on the other networks. So in fact, at any given moment, you'll often be the only customer using bandwidth on the network segment where you live! Electrastar builds its network for quality of service, not mass marketing, so that you can enjoy the most reliable internet service.

What are the monthly data allowances? Does ElectraStar have a "Fair User Policy" (FUP)?
You can see full details about all of ElectraStar's internet services by clicking below.

ElectraStar does not reduce your speed to limit your data consumption like other telecom companies who call this practice "Fair User Policy" or FUP.
